IMH Volunteering

About the Hospital

The Institute of Mental Health is a tertiary psychiatric hospital located at Buangkok Green Medical Park. “IMH offers a comprehensive range of psychiatric, rehabilitative and counseling services for children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly.”

IMH was established in 1928. It was the first mental hospital in Singapore, starting with 1,000 patients. “Since then, many advances have been made in treatment, training, and research. Their treatment integrates evidence-based therapies, supported by the departments of clinical psychology, nursing, occupational therapy, and medical social work, to provide holistic care for the patients. IMH is equipped with modern facilities, with 50 wards for inpatients and seven Specialist Outpatient Clinics.”

The IMH’s vision is to be “a tertiary centre of excellence and global leader in mental healthcare.” Its core missions are “to promote mental health, to promote person-focused service that is integrated, comprehensive, accessible and cost-effective, and to pursue continuous learning and research.”

Woodbridge Hospital Endowment Fund

The IMH has also established what is called the Woodbridge Hospital Endowment Fund. “The Fund is established to receive contribution and donations for the promotion, development and provision of mental health-related services in Singapore, including:
The pursuit of medical research and development;
Programs for continued medical, nursing, paramedical and related education and training;
Publication of research and educational literature;
Provision and improvement of equipment and facilities for research and development;
Holding of conferences, seminars, and exhibitions;
Provision of funded care to patients who are in need of financial assistance.”

Volunteering at IMH

Volunteers give patients an opportunity to build friendships and develop relationships with more people, other than their therapists. Volunteers play a key role in balancing the lives of the patients by helping them to feel that they are not forgotten or disliked by the community and society.

If you are want to make a difference in the lives of these patients, who live within the four walls of the hospital with no distractions, then you should volunteer!

Your Role as a Volunteer

Your role as a volunteer at IMH is to let the patients distract themselves and have as much fun as possible. You are here to make them feel loved, accepted, and happy. These are some things you can be involved with during your volunteer session:

“Conduct social and recreational activities, such as indoor and outdoor games, singing, dancing, karaoke, drama, coloring, and outings to places of interest
Help in rehabilitative activities, such as art and craft, grooming, basic social skills, painting, teaching patients the use of public amenities and taking public transport.
Plan, organize or participate in ad-hoc patient activities
Spend time with patients. For example, you can keep them company by talking to them, taking them for a walk, or just providing a listening ear.”
